Frequently Asked Questions
What is Original Medicare?
Original Medicare is a federally funded health insurance plan. It’s designed for people age 65 or older and some disabled people under age 65. Original Medicare is made of Part A and Part B. Medicare Part A pays for a portion of inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, and hospice care. Medicare Part B pays for a portion of outpatient surgery, doctor visits, and many other Medicare services not covered by Part A. With Original Medicare, you get easy access to any doctor that accepts Medicare.
What is a Medicare Advantage plan?
A Medicare Advantage plan is an alternative to Original Medicare and provides you with complete coverage for your Medicare benefits and often additional benefits beyond Original Medicare, such as vision care, dental coverage, and more. Many Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage. Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private companies approved by Medicare.
What is a Medicare Supplement plan?
These insurance plans are offered by private insurance companies to help you cover health care costs, including co-insurance, copayments and deductibles—"gaps" in Original Medicare coverage.
Is it easy to choose a plan?
Choosing a Medicare plan can sometimes be confusing. There are many different options and companies to considered. Plus, there are certain restrictions on when you can enroll or change your plan. Our Medicare Experts are ready to help you choose the best plan for you.
Will my doctor accept my coverage?
Visit Find a Doctor and search for your provider(s) to find out if they will accept your coverage.
What if I have Group Coverage after I retire?
If your employer offers to continue your group health coverage after you retire, carefully weigh your options and consider Medicare coverage alternatives available to you as an individual. If you decline your group health coverage you may not be able to return to it if you change your mind later. Ask your benefits administrator for more information.
When can I enroll in an MAPD or PDP plan?
These insurance plans are offered by private insurance companies to help you cover health care costs, including co-insurance, copayments and deductibles—"gaps" in Original Medicare coverage. The annual election period for Medicare Part D and Medicare Advantage plans is October 15 through December 7.
When can I enroll in a Supplement plan?
Open enrollment in Medicare supplement plans vary by plan. You can enroll in a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts Medex plan at any point during the year. You have, by law, at least 30 days to review a Medicare supplement policy. If you decide you don't want the coverage, you can get a full refund of any premiums you've paid during this "free look" period.
